This Thursday Free Range is proud to present Evan Parker and Matt Wright as part of the Wintersound 2019 festival.

Saxophonist Evan Parker has been described as ‘the greatest living exponent of free jazz … if you’ve ever been tempted by free improvisation, Parker is your gateway drug’ (Stewart Lee, The Guardian). After seeing the Cecil Taylor trio in New York in 1962, Evan Parker returned to England to become one of the key players in the development of European free improvisation, extending the approaches of free-jazz saxophonists like John Coltrane and Albert Ayler into the 21st century. For this concert, Evan will be joined by his long-time collaborator Matt Wright who specialises in live sampling and audio processing.

This concert is part of the Wintersound 2019 festival (a collaboration between Free Range and Canterbury Christ Church University). Wintersound takes place over Thursday 24th, Friday 25th and Saturday 26th January. ALL EVENTS ARE FREE ENTRY! The other events taking place on Thursday evening include:

7.30 - Colours & Shapes: Portraits of Free Improvisers. This short film by John Macedo captures performances and interviews featuring the musicians John Edwards, Phil Minton and Steve Noble. This is a rare opportunity to hear the motivation and philosophy behind the sound of these unique performers. John Macedo is a sound artist and performer who has collaborated with a wide variety of performers and runs a monthly concert at Café Oto called SOLO:DUO:TRIO.
